In this article you will find a number of popular problems and their fixes or workarounds. I am constantly updating the contents below as I find new issues. There are quite a few things that may go wrong in the first days after a new game is released and it's likely that you will find a solution here. If not, contact Monolith's Customer Support. Before we begin with the list, make sure your hardware is capable of running the game. Here are the PC System Requirements for Shadow of War.
Cannot download or install Shadow of War on Steam
Some download problems can be resolved by clearing your download cache in Steam's download settings, or by changing your download region. Try clearing your download cache first, and if that doesn't help try selecting another download region. Even if you have the nearest region already selected trying a different one may resolve temporary network issues in your region. This is one of the most demanding games when it comes to storage space. Nearly 100 GB are required for you to download and install the full game with its 2 DLC packages for High Resolution Textures and 4k Cinematic Cutscenes
Shadow of War sound issues – accelerated high-pitched sound
If you are experiencing weird sound issues when you launch Shadow of War and the voices are all sped-up, be sure to try this solution: Right click the speaker icon on your taskbar, go to Playback Devices, then Properties. In Advanced tab set the format to 16 bit and 44100Hz (CD Quality) or whatever is the lowest for your system. There have been reports that this doesn't always help. It depends on your sound card. Try other settings from the drop-down menu until it is fixed. For some players it is the 48kHz/24bit that fixed the issue.
Graphical Errors and glitches with Shadow of War
If your game isn't running properly, crashes or displays weird artifacts on the screen, make sure to use the latest original drivers for your video card. I cannot speak for AMD, but my own PC has Nvidia GPU and they have just released a new official driver for Shadow of War that makes sure you have a smooth experience. To update your graphics card driver, go to the official website and download the latest version. For Nvidia: https://www.geforce.com/drivers, for AMD: http://support.amd.com/en-us/download
Be sure to check if your PC system can answer the hardware requirements to play the game. I have Benchmarks available for 1440p and 4k. Take a look to see how the game runs on my PC hardware.
How to fix Screen Tearing in Shadow of War
The solution to this little problem I have is only available to Nvidia video card owners as I don't know how it works with AMD. Similar, probably, I just can't offer a solution. To remove screen tearing at high frame rates when playing on PC, be sure to use Adaptive Vsync setting or just cap the frame rate to whatever your monitor's default is (usually 60). I've done a few benchmarks and the tearing can be quite frustrating. This is one simple way of removing it and it wont hurt your gameplay experience at all.
Shadow of War launches on the wrong monitor screen
This happened to me too. If, for whatever reason, your game doesn't launch in the correct screen (if you have multiple, of course), press ALT+ENTER to go to windowed mode and then simply move it to the correct screen. Press ALT+ENTER again to maximize it and enjoy!
Where to find the pre-order bonuses in Shadow of War
If you have pre-ordered the game, you are entitled on several InGame items. The Epic Sword of Domination will be given to you as you launch the game for the first time. The Legendary Champions War Party you can find in the Marketplace. Open your unopened chests and one of them will be the pre-order bonus. Shadow of War Direct3D 11.1 API not available issue
This is most likely related to Windows 7. This version of the OS does not support DirectX 11.1, only 11.0. To learn more about the Platform Update for Windows 7 and how to install it, visit this link: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=36805. A number of reports suggest to download all the updates from this link: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2847882/prerequisite-updates-for-internet-explorer-11 as the issue seems to be related to IE 11. Reports say that if you install all small updates for Internet Explorer 11, not the browser itself, on Windows 7, you can launch the game.
Shadow of War wont launch – error code 0xc00007b
This is once again an issue with Windows 7. The game requires minimum Windows 7 with SP1 and Platform Update to run. Check the above paragraph and make sure your PC covers the hardware and software requirements to run Shadow of War.
Shadow of War Windows Store – error code 0x80070005
This should no longer be an issue as it was related to an attempt to download, install and play the game before its official release. If you had this previously, try resuming the install process again and it should finish in no time.
Shadow of War Black Screen after launching
This problem can be fixed by downloading the latest version of Microsoft Runtime Library. You can find it here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2977003/the-latest-supported-visual-c-downloads
Another popular solution is to play the game in Borderless, instead of Full Screen.
Shadow of War looks ugly and blurry
Be sure to check if you have downloaded the extra high resolution textures pack. You can download it from the official game page on Steam. It's quite big, though. And on top of that, there's an additional 4k Cinematic Pack that will allow you to enjoy all of the pre-rendered cinematic cutscenes at the highest possible quality.
Important! Make sure you turn off Dynamic Resolution on PC! It's turned ON by default and can cause your game to look very blurry and weird at times.
Inverted controls Shadow of War Issue on PC
If you are playing the game on PC with a controller and are experiencing weird inverted controls for Stealth, Bow and others, unplug the controller, switch back to keyboard and mouse, play for a while, then plug back in the controller. Reports suggest that this fixes the issue and your controls will now be normal.
Save data not compatible with the latest update of Shadow of War
This message might appear for you. If it does, there's no reason to worry. It seems to be a fake/false alarm. Things work normally despite this warning. Everything can be saved and loaded properly. If not, then you should contact customer support, but in all cases I have heard, everyone is fine and can play their game.
Steam Family not working for Shadow of War
It seems that this feature is not available (at least in the first days after release) as multiple reports have appeared that players cannot share it with their family members. It might just not be possible. After all, it's WB Games we are taking about here…
Your Shadow of Mordor Nemesis not loading correctly in Shadow of War
The Nemesis Forge should automatically detect and import your Nemesis and Follower from Shadow of Mordor into Shadow of War. This has been reported multiple times and there is no solution at this point (11th October). To make sure things are correct on your end – you have to play both games on the same platform and with the same account (example – Steam).
Shadow of War is locked at 42 FPS on PC
This appears to be a popular issue among Ryzen users. There is no solution at this moment, but just so you know – you are not alone!
Long loading times in Shadow of War
As mentioned previously, this is a giant game, reaching just about 100GB. It is expected to load slower on a conventional HDD, however SSD should fix that problem. Of course, if you don't have an SSD available, the solution wont be so simple for you, but all reports point that the game runs smooth when installed on an SSD (mine included).
Cannot connect to the Market place and Online Mode in Shadow of War
This issue should have now been fixed with a patch. Check if your game is up to date!
Shadow of War Burz The Chopper is stuck on the same scene
If you are experiencing over and over the scene where Burz the Chopper (story campaign NPC) keeps giving you the same advice over and over, go ahead and equip the Bodyguard perk (if you have unequipped it before for some reason). This should allow the story to continue and Burz will stop showing up for you with the same words and scene.
Cannot download the High Resolution Textures Pack for Shadow of War
This issue has no proper fix for the moment. The only solution is to uninstall the game and install it fresh. It occurs usually if you have downloaded the game first and are trying to add the Free 4k Cinematics and HD Textures Pack later. Be warned, though, the full game with the 2 Free DLCs is 100GB in size, where as the core game without the additional high resolution textures and 4k cinematic experience is about 60-65GB. Steam support recommends using the Steam Beta Client if you're having problems downloading the 4k Cinematic pack like I was. Switched to the beta and it downloaded just fine.
Unable to travel between regions in Shadow of War
This is a rather rare bug. If it happens to you and you are unable to travel from one region of Mordor to another via Fast Travel, simply quit your game and reload it again. You shouldn't need to even close the client. Simply exit and reload the last save.
Issues with Slaughter Tribe DLC Download and
The developers are aware of a currently existing issue with the downloading of the Slaughter Tribe DLC. It is specifically affecting players, who own the physical PS4 Gold edition of the game, purchased from Europe, Australia and New Zealand. The team is working hard to fix this and soon it should be resolved.
Update to the issue from 30th November: If you redeemed your physical Expansion Pass download code after Nov. 23, you should not experience any issues downloading this content. If you redeemed your code prior to Nov. 23 and are still experiencing issues, we wanted to let you know that we're getting closer to a solution.We know this is frustrating and we apologize for the inconvenience this has caused. Thank you for your patience as we get closer to a resolution.
Update to the issue from 5th December: WB Games announced that the issue has now been completely fixed and all owners of physical copies of the Gold Edition in Europe, Australia and New Zealand now have the Slaughter Tribe linked to their games.
Installed Video Device doesn't support DirectX 11 Features Error in Shadow of War
It is not a common error, but if you receive a message that your GPU doesn't support DirectX 11 features and you are certain that it does, here is a solution provided by a player on the official Support Forums: Remove "render.cfg" file found in C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\Documents\WB Games\Shadow of War.
The Arena Mission is broken, no Champion ever appears
If you are stuck on the Mission in the Arena in Minas Morgul and a champion or your Nemesis isn't showing up, this is likely because you are higher level than the intended for this part of the game – 11. WB Games Support confirmed it on the forums that this is an issue and will look for a fix to it. Players reported that starting the game over and doing the Arena before you reach lvl 11 works fine, but if you try to do it past lvl 11, you will most likely encounter the same bug.
Shadow of War crashing on launch – Windows Defender Issue
If your game has been crashing upon launch, it may be caused by the Windows Defender (if you are on PC, obviously). There has been a solution to that in Update 1.09. Make sure your client is up to date next time you launch the game!
Cannot download / access Shadow of War Blade of Galadriel DLC
Blade of Galadriel is a pay to play DLC. To be able to download and access its content you need to purchase it. The standalone price is $15 retail. It's also included for free for owners of the Gold Edition and/or Exnapsion pass. The DLC was released on 6th February 2018 and if you quality for it, the download would start automatically for you by default when you first launch your Steam or console. If it doesn't, check if you have the DLC unlocked or if your Expansion pass is registered into your account. The DLC is accessible InGame from the main menu after you launch Shadow of War – click Start, then choose Blade of Galadriel. If all seems to be in place, but you still have no access to the DLC, contact Monolith and WB Games Customer Support.
Cannot progress with The Etten mission – quest is not accessible
Some times you may not be able to progress on a mission. Whether it's The Etten or another one, the issue usually lies in the specific number and types of captains and watchiefs you have available in the region. If you don't have enough or your followers are killed and the mission is greyed out, see if getting yourself killed to progress the game's time will help you out. This will introduce new captains to the region and you will be able to manage them. The specific issue with the mission The Etten was reported by several players on the official forums. A possible working solution for it is to complete all other currently active main missions and fill in the ranks of your army with more Follower Captains and Warchiefs in the region.
Update 1.12 fixes the endless loading issue with the Etten Mission. Here are the Patch Notes. Make sure to update your client to the current version.
My Ringwraith Legendary Masks and Armor Gear are not Showing Up
The newly added Ringwraith Legendary gear items – five masks and the Servant's Blackened Armor are rewards for completing the Shadow Wars. These items were released with the 17th of July Update. You need to make sure your game is up to date (Patch number is 1.18 on Steam for PC, I am not certain which number it should be for Xbox One and PS4).
The Shadow Wars have been shortened and if you have not completed them before this update was released, you'll have to start over. If you have completed them already, you will receive all the new rewards when you first log in to the game after you update it.
If you are certain you have completed the Shadow Wars, but still haven't received your 5 Masks and the Armor, one possible solution to this bug, as reported by a user on the WBGames forums, is to download an old save of your game.
